Uluwatu at sunset: temple, Kecak dance and getting there
Uluwatu Temple sits on a cliff above the Indian Ocean, and every evening a Kecak performance takes place next to it as the sun goes down. The view is the easy part. Timing, tickets and the drive decide how the evening actually goes.

The short answer
Aim to be at Uluwatu by about 17:00, with both tickets sorted and loose items packed away. The temple and the Kecak dance are paid separately, the show starts at 18:00, and the southern Bukit peninsula is a long drive from Ubud or Canggu in evening traffic. A sunset tour mainly solves transport and timing; it does not change what you see.
| What to plan | What to know |
|---|---|
| Kecak dance | Daily 18:00–19:00 (not around Nyepi); the amphitheatre opens at about 16:00 |
| Temple | Open daily about 7:00–19:00 |
| Tickets | Temple entrance and Kecak are two separate tickets |
| Temple dress | A sarong and sash are required and are provided at the entrance |
| Monkeys | Long-tailed macaques take sunglasses, hats and phones |
| Dinner in Jimbaran | Optional and paid separately |
Two tickets, one evening
The temple ticket covers the public visitor paths along the cliff. It does not include the Kecak dance. The published 2026 rates are IDR 60,000 for a foreign adult (IDR 40,000 for a child) and IDR 150,000 for an adult Kecak ticket (IDR 75,000 for children), with parking on top. Have cash with you for the tickets and parking. Fees change, so check them again in the week you travel.
The Kecak amphitheatre is popular and seats fill up well before 18:00, especially at weekends and in high season. In bad weather the performance moves to a smaller stage.
The cliff path and the monkeys
The walk along the cliff is the part most people come for: stone paths, steps, views over the ocean and, inside the walls, an active Balinese Hindu sea temple. The inner sanctum is not open to visitors. Wear shoes you can walk in and dress modestly; the sarong goes on top.
Before you go through the gate, put sunglasses, hats, phones and anything dangling into a bag that closes. Do not feed or tease the monkeys. If something is taken, ask the temple staff for help rather than chasing the animal.
The drive is the real variable
Uluwatu is at the southern tip of Bali. From Ubud the journey is long; from Canggu or Seminyak it is shorter but often slow in late-afternoon traffic. Ceremonies can also close roads at short notice. Leaving "a bit later" is the most common way to miss the start of the show or arrive to a full amphitheatre.
That is the main argument for a fixed evening programme: someone else handles the pickup time, the parking and the queue at the booth.
What a sunset tour includes
The Uluwatu sunset and Kecak tour we list is an evening of about six hours with a private car and driver. According to the listing, the price covers the entrance ticket, fuel and parking, and the Kecak ticket is included. Dinner in Jimbaran Bay, personal expenses and driver tips are not. The tour is not wheelchair accessible.
Before you book, check in the option you select:
- Pickup time and area: pickups from Ubud start earlier than from the south; the exact time is shown when you book.
- Which tickets are covered: the listing says both; confirm it for your option.
- Jimbaran stop: it is a chance to eat on the beach, not a paid dinner. Ask for prices before ordering.
- Steps: the cliff path has steps and uneven paving.

Going on your own
If you prefer your own pace, a private car with driver for the afternoon is the alternative. You then buy both tickets at the booth yourself and decide whether to stay for dinner. Either way, keep the same rule: arrive early, not just on time.
Is Jimbaran worth adding?
Seafood on the sand in Jimbaran is a pleasant end to the evening, but it is optional and can cost more than the tour itself. If you are tired or have a long drive back to Ubud, going straight home is a reasonable choice.
