ATV and rafting in Bali: one combo day or two separate trips?

Quad biking through rice fields and rafting the Ayung River are both near Ubud, and both are sold together as a single day. The combo saves a second transfer. Whether it suits you depends on your energy, your group and how much mud you want on one day.

The short answer

Book the combo if you want both and have one free day; book them separately if anyone in the group only wants one, or if you want one activity in the morning and a quieter afternoon. The combo is a long, physical day with mud, river water and many steps. Separately, each activity fits comfortably into half a day.

What the combo day looks like

On the ATV and rafting combo we list, you ride a quad for about an hour and a half – solo or tandem – on a muddy track that passes the Gorilla Face cave, and you raft the Ayung River for about two and a half hours. The provider decides the order on the day: its current instructions put rafting first, lunch at the rafting base and the quad afterwards, while the description also describes the reverse, so don't plan the day around one sequence. There is a shower and a change of clothes between the two.

The listing includes a guide, safety gear, showers, lockers, towels, bottled water and a simple lunch (fried rice or noodles). Tips, photos and videos are extra, and transfer is an option you select. If a tandem group has an odd number of riders, one person rides solo and pays a surcharge on site. Expect a 15–20 minute walk down to the river and back up; water shoes or flip-flops are required for the rafting. The combo is listed as not suitable for pregnant women, people with back problems or mobility impairments, or wheelchair users.

When two separate trips are better

  • Not everyone wants both. Someone who doesn't like water can do just the quad tour, and the rest can raft.
  • You'd rather have energy left. The combo is two adventure activities back to back; splitting them gives you a free afternoon in Ubud.
  • You want to choose your timing. On its own, the rafting trip starts between 9:00 and 13:00 – you pick the start time when you book.

ATV on its own

The quad bike tour is run by the same provider. It includes a certified guide, a helmet, boots, elbow and knee pads, coffee or tea, bottled water, lunch and insurance. It is listed as suitable for beginners, groups are at most six quads, and it runs rain or shine. You will get muddy, so bring a change of clothes. If you arrive without the pickup option, you need to reach the base before 16:00. Not suitable for pregnant women, people with back problems or wheelchair users.

Rafting on its own

The Ayung River rafting trip has about two hours on the water, mainly class 2 rapids that can get stronger in the rainy season. The listing includes a guide, gear, bottled water, showers and towels, a buffet lunch and insurance, and it is open to ages 5 to 65. It is not suitable for pregnant travellers, people with heart problems or a low level of fitness – mostly because of the large number of steps to the river and back up.

If you want something calmer, river tubing on the Pakerisan River near Tampaksiring, also close to Ubud, is a slower alternative.

What to bring

Water shoes or sandals with a strap, swimwear, a full change of clothes, a plastic bag for wet things, sunscreen and some cash for photos or a locker. Leave your phone in the locker unless you have a waterproof case.
