Balinese massage in Bali: spa visit or at your villa?

In Bali you can enjoy a massage at a spa or have a therapist come to where you're staying. Both make sense, they just fit different days. Here's how to choose.

Which option fits your day

Choose a Balinese massage at a spa if you want to combine it with a day in Ubud. A massage at your villa is better when you don't feel like travelling anywhere else. What matters most is where you'll be that day and how much time you want to spend getting there.

What a spa visit in Ubud offers

Our selection includes a visit to Svaha Spa Bisma in Ubud. The spa is on Jalan Bisma and offers packages for one person and for couples. The price covers the treatment in the package you choose. The length depends on the treatment, so read exactly what the package includes before you book.

You arrange transport to the spa yourself. The easiest way is to put the visit at the end of a day in Ubud, for example after the plan in our article Ubud in one day. The offer is for ages 12 and up and isn't suitable for pregnant women. If you have health restrictions, check with the provider directly whether the treatment suits you.

How an in-villa massage works

With a massage at your villa or hotel, the therapist comes to you. It's an individual Balinese massage lasting 60 minutes, with oil and a sarong included. You enter your address when booking and the provider confirms whether it's within their service area. Don't assume a therapist will come anywhere on Bali.

The therapist doesn't bring a massage table. Prepare a suitable bed or a firm mat and a bit of space around it. Your accommodation must allow an outside therapist to visit. Some hotels don't, so it's best to ask in advance. Check with the provider in advance whether the massage is suitable during pregnancy, with back problems or for children.

Treatment length, location and what to say when booking

At the spa, pick a treatment based on how much time you have, not the longest package. With the in-villa massage, the length is fixed. If there are several of you, check whether the provider sends several therapists at once or whether you take turns.

When booking, mention:

  • the exact address and name of your accommodation,
  • the time that suits you,
  • the language you'd like to communicate in,
  • the pressure you prefer and any areas the therapist should avoid.

Don't treat a massage as medical treatment. If you have an injury, are pregnant or have another health issue, talk to a doctor first and tell the therapist too.

Choose the setting and time

The spa makes sense when you're in Ubud and want to end the day calmly. A villa massage fits after a long excursion, such as an early-morning Batur hike, or after you arrive. If you're coming from the airport, sort out your airport transfer first and plan the massage for after check-in.

Cancellation terms depend on the option you choose, so read them when booking.
