Your first surf lesson in Uluwatu: where, with whom and how to prepare
Uluwatu is known as a surf paradise, but its most famous wave is not for newcomers. Your first lesson takes place elsewhere, on a calmer beach nearby. Here is what to expect and how to choose a lesson.

The short answer
Yes, even if you have never stood on a board, you can take your first surf lesson in the Uluwatu area. It will not be on the famous wave below the cliffs, though – that one belongs to experienced surfers. Beginner lessons take place on a nearby beach that the operator chooses according to the waves on the day. In our selection, that is a surf lesson for beginners with no more than 2 students per instructor.
Uluwatu is an area, not a single beach
The name Uluwatu refers to the clifftop temple, the famous surf spot below it and the whole south-western part of the Bukit Peninsula. When a school advertises a "lesson in Uluwatu", it usually means the area, not the wave below the temple itself.
The main Uluwatu wave breaks over a sharp coral reef, has strong currents and is usually crowded with experienced surfers. It is not a place for a first lesson. Beginners learn where the waves are gentler and getting into the water is easier.
In our selection, the lesson takes place at one of three beaches – Balangan, Jimbaran or Dreamland – depending on where the waves are best that day. The operator decides the beach and the time, and if the weather changes the plan, they will contact you in advance. So do not count on a specific beach or time until they confirm it.
What you will learn in your first lesson
The lesson starts on the beach with a short theory and safety session. Surf schools usually explain how to lie on the board, how to paddle, how to stand up and how to behave in the water. Then you head into the water with your instructor, and after a short break there is a second practice session.
Expect to spend a lot of time paddling and falling off. If you manage to stand up for a moment, that is a great result for a first lesson. Nobody can promise it will happen straight away, though – it depends on the waves and on you.

Group or private lesson?
Our lesson runs in a small group, but with no more than 2 students per instructor. For most beginners that is a good compromise: the instructor is always close by and you still learn alongside others.
If you are nervous in the water or have had a bad experience in the sea, consider a private lesson. Several surf schools recommend one specifically for people who need their instructor by their side the whole time. Whichever school you choose, compare three things above all: how many students there are per instructor, what equipment you get, and where and how you meet.
Who this lesson is not for
- Children under 9 and people over 65 – as stated by the operator.
- Anyone who feels unsure in water out of their depth. The operator does not list swimming in its terms, but surf schools in the area agree that you do not need to be a strong swimmer, though you should stay calm when you find yourself in the water without your board.
- Anyone who wants to go straight to the reefs below Uluwatu. That is a goal for later, after several lessons and with an experienced guide.
How to prepare
- Swimwear and a towel – the towel is not included.
- Transport: hotel pickup is not part of the lesson. Check the transport options offered when you book, or arrange a car with a driver.
- Mornings are usually better: there is less wind and the waves are more regular.
- A phone number where you can be reached: if the beach or time changes, the operator will contact you in advance.
- Some slack in your plans: if the lesson is cancelled because of the conditions, another time or day is arranged.
Combining the lesson with other plans
The lesson lasts 2 hours, so most of the day is still yours. If you want to stay in the south, you can head to the temple above the ocean in the evening – we explain how in our article Uluwatu at sunset. For more about the area, its beaches and places to stay, see Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula.
